The largest class in the market, and the widest range of hull forms.
Motor yacht covers more ground than any other category, from a 70 foot planing flybridge to a 200 foot full-displacement tri-deck. The single most consequential distinction inside it is hull form, and it is the thing buyers most often overlook.
A planing hull is fast, shallower, and burns fuel proportionate to speed. A displacement hull is slower, deeper, dramatically more efficient at range, and far more comfortable in a seaway. A semi-displacement hull attempts both and compromises on each.
Which one is right follows entirely from how the yacht will be used — day trips and short hops reward planing; extended cruising and ocean passages reward displacement. Getting that wrong is the most expensive mistake available in this category.

A planing hull rises onto the water's surface at speed, delivering higher top speed and shallower draft at the cost of fuel consumption and seakeeping. A displacement hull pushes through the water at a speed limited by its waterline length, offering far greater range and comfort. Semi-displacement sits between the two.
Displacement yachts typically cruise at 10 to 12 knots. Semi-displacement vessels cruise in the high teens. Planing yachts commonly cruise in the mid-twenties with top speeds above thirty knots. Fuel consumption rises steeply with speed in every case.
A tri-deck has three full decks above the waterline — typically main, upper and sun deck — which substantially increases interior volume and outdoor living space for a given length. It generally appears above about 130 feet.
Steel and aluminium construction dominates above about 130 feet, offering strength and longevity at the cost of weight and corrosion management. GRP dominates below that, being lighter, faster and lower maintenance but less suited to very large hulls.
Very, above about 80 feet. Underway stabilisation improves comfort substantially; zero-speed stabilisation, which works at anchor, is what most owners notice the difference from day to day.
Judge hours against the yacht's age and its service history rather than in isolation. A well-maintained engine with 4,000 hours and full records is a better proposition than a neglected one with 1,200.
Yes. They sit within the motor yacht category and are well represented in the Miami and Southern California markets.
